Why Wallet Infrastructure Is Critical to Institutional Tokenization

As institutional tokenization moves into production, financial institutions need secure infrastructure to manage their digital assets and the transactions involving them.

Institutional wallets provide the cryptographic key management, transaction signing and governance capabilities required to operate on blockchain networks. They form an essential part of the infrastructure connecting tokenized assets with existing custody, treasury and settlement systems.

For regulated institutions, these capabilities must meet established security, governance and operational requirements.

Maintaining control over digital assets

Institutions need to retain control over who can authorise transactions and under what conditions.

Blockdaemon Institutional Vault uses a security method called threshold cryptography to keep the digital key used to sign transactions in separate pieces, so the complete key never needs to exist in one place. Transactions can only be signed with the institution's explicit approval, keeping it fully in control.

Institutions can also choose deployment models that align with their security and operational requirements, including client infrastructure, Blockdaemon infrastructure and hybrid deployment.

Financial institutions must consider how cryptographic keys are protected, how transaction approvals are enforced and how access is controlled across different teams and systems. The chosen wallet architecture also needs to accommodate existing security policies and internal risk management requirements.

Meeting governance, scalability, and compliance requirements

Beyond approvals, regulators expect institutions to apply oversight consistently (and be able to show it) which calls for a clear set of controls.

These include role-based approvals, counterparty allow-listing, audit trails and support for applicable administrative actions. Blockdaemon's wallet infrastructure is designed to extend these controls to blockchain-based transactions.

This allows institutions to apply established governance principles to tokenized assets while maintaining appropriate oversight of transaction activity.

For example, an institution may require transactions above a specified value to receive approval from multiple authorised individuals. It may also restrict transfers to approved counterparties and maintain a complete record of every transaction request, approval and execution.

Supporting multiple blockchain networks

Institutional tokenization is developing across multiple blockchain networks and institutions must consider how to maintain consistent security and governance controls across different environments.

Blockdaemon combines node and wallet infrastructure to support secure transaction signing and network connectivity. Its network-agnostic architecture is designed to help institutions expand across supported networks while retaining consistent key management and policy controls.

A common infrastructure layer can simplify expansion into additional blockchain networks and tokenization use cases. Institutions can maintain familiar security and governance processes while adapting their connectivity and transaction workflows to the requirements of each network.

Choosing an institutional wallet provider

Institutions evaluating wallet infrastructure should consider security, transaction governance, deployment flexibility, system integration and network support.

They should also look for evidence that the technology has been used successfully in regulated production environments.

Blockdaemon's participation in DTCC's July production-based transaction test (July Event) and subsequent launch of the DTCC Tokenization Service (DTS) on October 28, 2026, demonstrates its experience supporting institutional tokenization workflows. Its combination of wallet, node and transaction infrastructure provides a foundation for organisations developing their own tokenization capabilities.

For institutions preparing to adopt tokenized assets, the choice of infrastructure provider will influence security, operational complexity and the ability to support future use cases. Experience with institutional deployments, established governance capabilities and support for multiple networks should therefore feature prominently in the evaluation process.
