The DTCC Tokenization Service (DTS) is now live, marking an important milestone in the evolution of capital markets.
The DTS enables eligible Participants of The Depository Trust Company (DTC), the central securities depository subsidiary of DTCC, to convert eligible DTC-custodied securities between traditional book-entry and tokenized forms and transfer them between digital wallets registered with DTC on supported blockchain networks. These digital representations retain the same ownership rights, investor protections and economic entitlements as their traditional counterparts.
With more than $114 trillion in assets under custody, DTC is uniquely positioned to influence how tokenized securities are adopted across the industry. With launch of the DTS, a significant step has been taken towards scaling tokenization into established financial market infrastructure.
One of the most significant opportunities is collateral mobility.
Tokenized securities can move between eligible counterparties more efficiently, creating opportunities to improve intraday funding, margin management and liquidity. These capabilities could fundamentally change how institutions deploy and manage their assets.
The DTS also creates opportunities for greater interoperability between traditional financial infrastructure and blockchain networks. This could help institutions access new liquidity pools and develop more efficient operating models.
For institutions with large securities portfolios, even small improvements in collateral efficiency could have a major financial impact. Faster access to eligible assets may also reduce the liquidity held in reserve and make it easier to respond to changing markets.
The DTS provides a foundation for integrating tokenized securities into existing capital markets operations.
Institutions will need to consider how these assets fit within their custody, treasury, collateral and settlement systems. They will also need infrastructure that supports secure on-chain transaction management, regulatory controls and interoperability across blockchain networks.
Institutions best prepared for tokenization will gain the most. That means adapting their operations, building the right technology and governance, and choosing use cases with measurable business benefits.
As adoption grows, the standards set during early production could shape how tokenized securities are managed across the industry. Common approaches to identity, security, governance and interoperability will become increasingly important.
We expect tokenized collateral and securities settlement to become increasingly integrated into day-to-day institutional operations. As participation grows, attention will shift towards interoperability, operational efficiency and the ability to manage tokenized assets across multiple networks.
